Not every Missouri driver needs an SR-22 to reinstate a license. Whether you need one depends on the specific suspension, revocation, or denial shown on your Missouri driver record.
An SR-22 is not a special license and it is not a separate kind of automobile insurance. It is a form filed by an insurance company to show the Missouri Department of Revenue that you have the required liability coverage. If your record requires the filing, an ordinary insurance card may not be enough.
What exactly is an SR-22?
The Missouri Department of Revenue describes an SR-22 as an insurance filing from your insurance company showing that your motor vehicle has liability insurance. You obtain the underlying policy from an insurer, and the insurer submits the SR-22 proof.
Because the form is connected to the policy, a lapse or cancellation can be reported to the Department. If Missouri requires you to maintain the filing and it ends too early, your driving privilege can be suspended again.
When does Missouri commonly require an SR-22?
The Department’s current reinstatement chart lists SR-22 proof for several kinds of driver-license actions, including:
- non-alcohol point suspensions and revocations;
- administrative alcohol suspensions or revocations;
- alcohol-related point suspensions and revocations;
- certain motor-vehicle accident judgments;
- mandatory-insurance suspensions; and
- some limited-driving-privilege applications.
This is not an exhaustive list. One driver may have more than one Department action, and each action can carry different requirements.
Does every license reinstatement require an SR-22?
No. Some reinstatements require a fee, court compliance, testing, SATOP, an ignition interlock device, or another document without requiring an SR-22. Other records require several of those items together.
The safest approach is to review the Department action section of a current driver record and the letters sent by the Driver License Bureau. Do not buy an SR-22 solely because someone else needed one for a different kind of suspension.
How long must an SR-22 stay on file?
The period depends on the reason for the license action:
- For many point, alcohol, and accident-related actions, the Department’s chart requires the filing for two years from the applicable starting date.
- For certain mandatory-insurance or false-insurance actions, the Department may require proof for three years from the eligible-reinstatement date.
Those dates are easy to confuse. Confirm the start date shown on your own record before asking an insurer to remove the filing.
Is an SR-22 the only thing I need for reinstatement?
Often, no. Depending on the record, Missouri may also require:
- a reinstatement fee;
- proof of court compliance;
- SATOP completion;
- an approved ignition interlock device;
- payment or an agreement concerning an accident judgment;
- a complete driver examination; or
- clearance of another state’s hold.
Submitting one required item does not clear the others. Missouri specifically instructs drivers with multiple actions to check the requirements for each action.
How do I obtain and file an SR-22?
- Confirm that your record actually requires it. Use your current driver record or contact the Driver License Bureau.
- Contact an insurer licensed to provide the required coverage. Ask specifically about an SR-22 filing for Missouri.
- Make sure the filing reaches the Department. Insurers commonly file it directly, but confirm receipt rather than assuming.
- Complete every other reinstatement item. The filing alone may not restore the privilege.
- Verify your status before driving. A payment receipt or insurance card is not the same as confirmation that the Department has reinstated you.
Does an SR-22 automatically make insurance expensive?
The SR-22 is a filing, but the events leading to it may affect how an insurer evaluates risk and prices coverage. Rates and eligibility are determined by insurance companies, not by McClain Law or the Department of Revenue. It may be useful to compare quotes, provided each company understands the exact filing Missouri requires.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my regular insurance card instead of an SR-22?
Not when the Department specifically requires an SR-22 filing. An ordinary card may show current coverage but may not satisfy the filing requirement attached to your driver record.
Do I need an SR-22 if I do not own a car?
You may still need proof that satisfies Missouri’s requirement. Some insurers offer non-owner coverage with an SR-22 filing. The correct product depends on your driving and ownership circumstances.
Can I cancel the SR-22 after my license is reinstated?
Do not cancel it merely because the license was reinstated. If the required maintenance period has not ended, an early cancellation can create another suspension.
How do I know whether Missouri received my SR-22?
The Department directs drivers to call (573) 526-2407 to confirm receipt of reinstatement requirements. You may also review available status information through MyDMV.
